The Wheelbarrow Race started in 1964 in the picturesque village of Braughing in East Herts. It is a quirky, unique and hilarious event where children and adults dress up and take part in various age-appropriate races in wheelbarrows – involving beer and getting wet in the Ford.
Teams of two people don fancy dress and take it in turns to push each other around a 400 metre course. The race starts with one person running through the Ford, drinking a pint of beer (provided by the Golden Fleece) and then jumping into the wheelbarrow. The pusher then pushes their team mate around the course, stopping at the other two village pubs (The Axe and Compasses and The Brown Bear) for more pints of beer, (swapping pushers) before finishing back at the Ford for a good soaking.
The Fair part of the day starts at 12.00 noon with many stalls for adults and children alike, a beer tent and interesting food stalls.
There is also a dog show for everyone to show off their much loved canine members of the family.
It is a wonderful family afternoon out and a firm fixture in many people's diaries.
